Cat

Independence that does not ask permission. The cat is not one of the twelve branches — it arrived in Chinese domestic life later and sits outside the formal system. That outsider status is part of what it means: something that does not need to be counted.

In the traditional vocabulary it is not read as a warning. Independence that does not ask permission. The animal is treated as a description of a situation — usually involving timing or a person — not as a prediction. The cat is the clearest example in this database of an animal whose meaning comes from its absence in the classical system rather than its presence.

Traditional readings connect the cat to solitude kept by choice, and to the kind of attention that watches without participating. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
