Crowd

A crowd is read as collective pressure — many people forming one condition, in which you are either carried or separate. People in quantity are read under Earth for their mass. Traditional reading asks whether you are moving with the crowd or against it.

It points to a function rather than an event. A crowd is read as collective pressure — many people forming one condition, in which you are either carried or separate. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A crowd in which everyone is known to you is a reported variant, read as collective pressure made up entirely of particular people.

Sources treat the crowd as one of the few images where being indistinguishable is itself the meaning, distinct from being alone in it. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
