Coin

A single coin narrows the money symbol down to one decision — a small, specific exchange rather than a general one. Where money stands for ongoing exchange, a coin stands for a single transaction. Its condition is the detail that carries meaning: bright, holed, ancient or foreign coins each shift the reading.

It points to a function rather than an event. A single coin narrows the money symbol down to one decision — a small, specific exchange rather than a general one. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A coin you cannot pick up is a recurring image in dream records, and in the traditional reading it marks an offer that is available but not yet yours to take.

Old Chinese sources often attach coins to decisions and omen-questions rather than to wealth, since coins were themselves a divination tool. A holed coin — the form actually used — is the one that can be strung together, so it reads as something connectable. It is grouped under Metal (金) in the five-element system.
