House

A house is read as the self or the family structure — rooms standing for parts of a life rather than for property. Houses sit under Earth, the element of container and support. Traditional reading moves room by room: the roof, the kitchen and the cellar each describe a different layer, and which room you were in tells you which layer the dream was about.

It points to a function rather than an event. A house is read as the self or the family structure — rooms standing for parts of a life rather than for property. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. Finding an extra room you did not know existed is treated as a distinct and well-attested image, read as capacity you have not counted on rather than as something hidden from you.

An empty house and a crowded one are opposite readings — emptiness points to unused capacity, crowding to obligations that have filled the space. A house under repair is one of the most frequently recorded variants. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
