Tea

Tea is read as measured exchange — a pause taken deliberately rather than a need satisfied. Tea is Water with a social function. Traditional reading asks who poured, since the pouring is the gesture.

It points to a function rather than an event. Tea is read as measured exchange — a pause taken deliberately rather than a need satisfied. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. Tea that has gone cold before it is drunk is a common variant, read as a pause that outlasted its purpose.

Sources treat tea as the image of a transaction conducted slowly, distinctly from wine which is read as release. It is grouped under Water (水) in the five-element system.
