Earth in a BaZi Chart
Earth appears in a chart as the heavenly stems 戊 and 己, and as four earthly branches rather than two: 辰, 戌, 丑 and 未. The extra branches are the structural reason Earth is the centre — it is present at every seasonal handover.

At a glance
Earth appears in a chart as the stems 戊 and 己 and four branches — 辰, 戌, 丑 and 未, the handover months.
In the classical correspondence tables Earth governs late summer and the centre, the spleen and stomach, the mouth, and the sweet taste.
How Earth appears in a chart
The two stems are quite different in feel. 戊 is yang Earth: the mountain, the wall, the thing that does not move and is used as a reference. 己 is yin Earth: the field, the garden soil, the ground that receives seed and produces. A chart with 戊 prominent reads as immovable and dependable; the same chart with 己 reads as cultivable and responsive.
The four branches are the handover months, and each carries hidden stems that make it more than Earth. 辰 contains Water and Wood, 未 contains Fire and Wood, 戌 contains Metal and Fire, 丑 contains Water and Metal — which is why the Earth branches are read as storage: each one holds the residue of the season that just ended.
As a day master, Earth is the self as container. A 戊 day master is described as steady, slow to commit, and hard to shift; a 己 day master as adaptable, nurturing, and prone to taking on other people's material. The caution is the same as for every day master: one character in eight.
Stems, branches, and the day master
The stems
戊 yang Earth: the mountain and the wall, immovable and used as reference. 己 yin Earth: the field, receptive and productive. The pair is about whether the ground is a boundary or a bed.
The branches
辰, 戌, 丑, 未 — the four handover months, each storing the residue of the season before it. A chart with several of them reads as heavy unless there is Wood to open it.
As a day master
Read as the self as container. A 戊 day master holds a position; a 己 day master holds other people. What the chart supports decides how much either can carry.

How much weight this carries
This is the most technical page in the set and the most falsifiable: either a chart contains Earth characters or it does not. What is not falsifiable is what those characters mean — that part depends on the practitioner, the school, and the question being asked.

Common questions
Why does Earth have four branches?
Because the last month of every season is a handover, and Earth is the phase that mediates transitions. The four branches are the four handovers.
Is 戊 stronger than 己?
It is more fixed, not stronger. 戊 resists change; 己 absorbs it. Which is preferable depends on what the chart needs.
What does it mean to have no Earth in a chart?
That the phase is supplied by luck cycles rather than by the birth chart. It is common and not a defect — charts are read for balance.
