Earth and Water
Earth controls Water. This is the least discussed of the four relations and the most consequential: without Earth, Water has no banks, and a chart with unbanked Water reads as flooding rather than as depth.

What Earth does to Water
In practice Earth-Water is the pair that produces containment. Water on its own is intelligence without structure, movement without direction, and it is the phase most likely to scatter. Earth gives it a channel, and the resulting chart reads as capable rather than as merely clever.
It goes wrong when the Earth is too much. A dam that exceeds the water does not contain it, it stops it — and the classical picture of over-controlled Water is stagnation: a person with plenty of depth and no movement, holding everything and expressing nothing. The distinction between a bank and a wall is entirely one of proportion.
In a chart, and in a person
In a chart
Favourable when Water is excessive and needs a channel. Unfavourable when Water is the chart's intelligence and the Earth is heavy — then the control produces the stuck picture rather than the deep one.
In a person
You are the structure that makes the depth usable. It works as a channel and fails as a wall, and the difference is whether the thing being held can still move.

How much weight this carries
Control is the relation most often mistranslated as hostility. In practice Earth controlling Water describes structure — the thing that keeps the other from expanding without limit. It becomes destructive only when the controlling element is itself unsupported.

Common questions
Does Earth stop Water?
It channels it. Stopping is the failure mode of the relation, not its purpose — the classical image is a riverbank, not a plug.
What does over-controlled Water look like?
Depth with no expression: a person who understands a great deal and says almost none of it, and who experiences their own restraint as caution.
