Metal and Fire

Fire controls Metal, seen from the Metal side. This is the most uncomfortable of the four relations for the phase experiencing it, because Metal's whole function is to hold a shape and Fire is what removes it.

At a glance

Fire controls Metal: the forge that makes the rigid thing workable, at the cost of its shape.

Metal is controlled by Fire.

What Metal does to Fire

The tradition's reading is not that Fire destroys Metal but that it makes it workable — a forge is where a blade is made, and the metal that goes in is not yet a blade. A chart in this position is being softened into something more useful than it was, and the process is experienced as loss of definition rather than as gain in function.

The failure is proportion. Fire heavier than the Metal can survive does not shape it, it melts it — and the classical picture of over-controlled Metal is a person who has been heated until they no longer have a position on anything. That is the specific damage of this pair, and it is why the relation is read alongside the chart's temperature.

In a chart, and in a person

In a chart

Useful when Metal is excessive and needs to be made usable. Harmful when Metal is the chart's structure and the Fire is unregulated — then the control is destruction and shows up as collapse rather than as craft.

In a person

You are the one being made workable, and it feels like being dissolved. The correction is to keep one thing that does not bend, so the heat has something to work against.

How much weight this carries

Being controlled is the relation people dislike hearing about, and the classical texts are less alarmed than modern readers expect. Restraint is how a chart gets shape. The problem is only when the restraint is heavier than the thing being restrained.

Common questions

Does Fire destroy Metal?

It melts it, which is the precondition for working it. Destruction enters only when the Fire has nothing regulating it.

Why does this pairing feel like losing yourself?

Because Metal's identity is its shape, and the relation removes the shape in order to make it useful. The feeling is accurate; the conclusion that it is damage is not always.
