Most guides score day master strength by adding up help and pressure. The classical method asks three separate questions, and the order matters.
Almost every introduction to BaZi treats day master strength the same way: count the characters that support your day master, count the ones that drain it, and see which pile is bigger. It is presented as a weighing exercise, and it produces a number that then drives everything else in the reading.
The classical method is not a weighing exercise. It asks three separate questions — 得令, 得地, 得势 — and the first thing to understand is that they are not three equal contributions to one score. They are asked in order, and each one can settle the matter before the next is reached.
The three tests are: is the day master in season (得令), does it have a root in the branches (得地), and do the other stems support it (得势). A guide that lists them as a checklist is already closer to the tradition than one that assigns them points.
What the checklist framing still gets wrong is the order. 得令 is asked first because the month branch is the single heaviest input in a chart — it sets the season, and the season decides which element is at full strength before anything else is read. A day master in season starts from a position no amount of counting can overturn.
This is where the scoring approach breaks. If you add everything up, three helpful stems in the year, month and hour pillars can appear to outweigh a day master born in the month that weakens it. In the classical method they cannot, because the season was evaluated first and it does not get outvoted.
得令 means 'obtaining the command'. The test is whether the day master's element is the one the month branch puts in charge. Wood day master born in spring, Fire in summer, Metal in autumn, Water in winter — those are in season. The same day master in the opposite season is not merely unsupported; it is being worked against by the climate of the whole chart.
Practitioners describe the season in five states rather than two. The element in charge is at its peak; the element that produced it is on the way out; the one it produces is newly born; the one that controls it is trapped; and the one it controls is dead. Those five states apply to every element in the chart at once, which is why the month branch colours everything downstream rather than only the day master.
A practical note: this is the one input that cannot change. Luck pillars can add support, but they cannot move your birth month. When a reading leans hard on the season, it is leaning on the fixed part of the chart.
得地 means 'obtaining ground'. The question is whether the day master, or any other stem, has a root in the branches — a branch that actually contains that element among its hidden stems.
This test is more granular than it first appears, because branches hold more than one stem and those stems are not equally weighted. A branch whose main hidden stem is your element gives a deep root; a branch where your element sits in the middle or leftover position gives a shallow one. The same branch therefore counts differently depending on which element you are testing.
The point of separating this from the season is that it answers a different question. 得令 asks whether the climate is on your side. 得地 asks whether there is anything solid under you at all. A day master can be out of season and still rooted, which is a materially different chart from one that is out of season and floating.
得势 means 'obtaining force', and it is the count that the scoring method treats as the whole exercise. It asks how many of the other stems and branch elements share the day master's element or produce it.
On its own this is the weakest of the three, and the reason is structural. Stems sit on the surface; branches carry the ground. A helpful stem that has no root in any branch is a promise rather than a supply, and the classical texts are explicit that an unsupported stem counts for much less. Counting characters without checking whether they are rooted is how charts end up read as strong when they are not.
Put the three together and the shape of the method becomes clear. The season tells you what the chart is working with. Rooting tells you what is actually under the day master as opposed to what is merely visible. Force tells you how much of the support is real. Each question is narrower than the one before it.
The practical payoff is that you usually stop early. Most charts are settled at the first or second test, and the third only matters for charts that are genuinely close. A method that adds everything up has to compute all of it every time, which is one reason the scoring approach produces confident-sounding verdicts on charts that the classical method would call balanced and move on from.
It is also worth saying what strength is for. It is not a reading in itself — it is the switch that decides which elements are read as useful and which as excess. That is why getting it wrong matters more than getting it precise: an over-confident verdict here propagates through everything that follows.
There is a real division between practitioners who quantify strength and those who do not. The quantitative school assigns weights to the month branch, to rooted stems and to unrooted ones, and produces a percentage or a grade. It is transparent, reproducible and easy to teach, and it is where most online calculators sit.
The classical position is that the three tests are qualitative and that their priority order is the thing being applied, not a total. Practitioners in this camp will happily say that a chart is 'weak by season but deeply rooted' and stop there, without resolving it into one word.
Both approaches agree on where to look and disagree about what to do with what they find. If you are comparing two readings of the same chart, this is the first place to check — a disagreement about strength is often not a disagreement about the chart but about which method was used on it.
