Empty Branches (空亡): How the Sixty Cycle Runs Out
Every stem-branch pair leaves two branches unpaired. What 空亡 means, and why practitioners disagree about how much it matters.
When the ten stems and twelve branches pair up, they do not produce sixty even combinations — they produce sixty pairs across a cycle of the ten stems where two branches are left without a stem in each round. Those two branches are 'empty' (空亡, kong wang) relative to that group, and the concept is one of the more disputed corners of the system.
It is worth knowing because it turns up in technical readings, and because the way it is handled says a great deal about how practitioners work.
How emptiness is determined
The ten stems advance through the twelve branches in order. Since there are two more branches than stems, each pass through the cycle completes ten pairings and leaves two branches unpaired. The pairs unpaired in that pass are the empty branches for that group.
So the Jia-Zi group (starting with the first stem) leaves Xu and Hai empty. The Jia-Xu group leaves Shen and You empty. The pattern advances by two branches each time, which is why the emptiness table can be looked up but is better understood than memorised.
What emptiness is read as
The classical reading is weakened or voided influence. A branch that is empty in a chart is described as not fully carrying its element — the quality it would normally supply arrives diminished or delayed.
This is applied across positions. An empty spouse palace is read as a partnership that does not provide what the position normally promises; an empty wealth branch as earning that does not accumulate in the expected way. It is a description of reduced effect, not of absence.
The disagreement
Schools differ on how much weight to give it. Some treat emptiness as a significant modifier that must be checked on every important branch; others treat it as a minor technical note that only matters when the branch in question is already weak.
A further complication: branches can be 'filled' — a branch that is empty at birth may lose that status in a later luck pillar, or when clashed or combined by a current year. Practitioners who use emptiness generally treat it as conditional rather than fixed.
The honest position
Emptiness is a real feature of the cycle and a real technique in classical practice. What it is not is a reliable standalone indicator, and the tradition itself is not unified on how heavily to weigh it.
Where it earns its place is in explaining anomalies — the position that should be strong and is not, the branch that supplies an element and seems not to deliver it. Used that way it is a diagnostic, not a verdict.
