What are the twelve palaces in Zi Wei Dou Shu?
Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune and Parents. Each covers one domain of life, and the palaces are read as a connected pattern rather than individually.
Zi Wei Dou Shu is built on a grid of twelve palaces, and the grid is the system. Unlike BaZi, which reads eight characters in four positions, Zi Wei places fourteen major stars onto twelve life domains and reads the resulting pattern.
Understanding the palaces is the prerequisite for reading any Zi Wei chart at all, because a star's meaning depends entirely on which palace it occupies.
The grid
The twelve palaces are Life, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune and Parents. They are arranged in a fixed sequence, and the Life palace is placed according to the birth month and hour.
Two structural rules govern the whole grid. The first is that opposite palaces are read together — Life against Travel, Wealth against Fortune, Spouse against Career. The second is that the palaces are not independent: a reading is the pattern across all twelve, not a list of twelve separate verdicts.
What each palace covers
The Life palace is the core: character and the general shape of the life. The Spouse and Career palaces describe the two central partnerships of adult life — one personal, one professional. Wealth and Property cover how money arrives and what it accumulates into.
Health, Travel and Friends cover constitution, movement and the wider network. Siblings, Children and Parents cover the family relationships in both directions. Fortune is the inner life — what actually produces contentment rather than what looks like it should.
The opposite-palace rule
Every palace is read with the one directly opposite it, which is always six positions away. Life and Travel are a pair — how a person is at home against how they are away from it. Spouse and Career are a pair, which is why Zi Wei is useful for questions about work-life balance in a way BaZi is not.
This rule is what prevents the common error of reading one palace in isolation. A strong Wealth palace opposite a weak Fortune palace is read as earning capacity without proportionate satisfaction — a specific and recognisable pattern that neither palace shows alone.
How stars work in the grid
The fourteen major stars each carry a fixed character, and the palace they land in determines what that character applies to. Tan Lang — desire and appetite — in Wealth reads as acquisitiveness; in Fortune it reads as restlessness; in Spouse as a partner who is attractive and hard to satisfy.
Brightness modifies everything. The same star in a strong position and a weak one is read as two different lives, which is why the system's practitioners resist giving an interpretation from a single star placement. The grid is the reading.
