Tian Xiang (天相) — The Chancellor

Tian Xiang is the diplomatic star: proper, balanced, well-presented and built to make other people's plans work. Where it falls, life is decent, orderly and quietly central to everyone else's arrangements.

This page covers what the star is, how it behaves in each of the twelve palaces, and which companion stars change it.

What Tian Xiang is

天相 is the Chancellor or the Minister — the second of the system's administrative pair, alongside Tian Fu. Its classical associations are the seal of office, correctness, presentation and service, and its temperament is the one those associations imply: measured, fair, well-behaved and accommodating.

Tian Xiang charts are typically the people who hold things together. They are good at protocol, at negotiation, at being trusted by both sides in a disagreement, and at presenting an organisation's face properly. Because the star carries associations with appearance and respectability, these charts are often found in public-facing and administrative roles, and they tend to be well-liked in a professional rather than a personal way.

The classical limitation is dependency on context. A chancellor has no kingdom of his own: the star needs a principal to serve, and charts with Tian Xiang prominent tend to be shaped by whichever stars and structures they are attached to. Read practically, this is a placement of excellent second opinions, reliable execution and real difficulty initiating something with no external mandate behind it.

From the inside

You are usually the most reasonable person in the room, and you notice that being reasonable is a role rather than a personality. The thing worth testing, honestly, is how many of your preferences are actually yours and how many are the position you have learned to occupy. Tian Xiang charts also carry a specific sensitivity that does not fit the diplomatic presentation: you mind being misjudged, more than the other administrative stars do, and you will absorb a fair amount of inconvenience to avoid a scene in which you look bad.

Tian Xiang in the twelve palaces

The star means something different in each palace, and a Zi Wei reading is largely the work of combining the two. These are the twelve placements and what each one produces.

PalaceWhat Tian Xiang does there
Life 命宫Measured, correct, well-presented and dependable, with a strong instinct for what is appropriate. The life is orderly and the growth is in developing a preference of your own.
Siblings 兄弟宫Good relations with siblings and a family role as the one who mediates. Peacekeeping is comfortable and can hide a reluctance to state your own position.
Spouse 夫妻宫The classical placement for a harmonious marriage and a well-matched partner. The relationship is pleasant, and its characteristic risk is that two accommodating people can avoid a necessary conversation indefinitely.
Children 子女宫Well-behaved children and a respectful household. You present well and the standard you model is reasonable rather than demanding, which works.
Wealth 财帛宫Steady, respectable income and competent management rather than dramatic gain. You spend on presentation and quality, and the financial record is orderly.
Health 疾厄宫The skin, the circulation and, traditionally, the heart and small intestine. Quiet, accumulating stress carried politely rather than discharged.
Travel 迁移宫Business travel, protocol visits and a good reception wherever you are formally received. You do better travelling with a purpose than drifting.
Friends 仆役宫Good professional standing and many friendly relations, with the question of depth left open. People trust your judgement and may know rather less about you than they assume.
Career 官禄宫Administration, governance, law, diplomacy, public relations, secretariat, human resources, and any role where being trusted by both sides is the value. You need a principal or an institution to be at your best.
Property 田宅宫Property is orderly, well-presented and secure, with a tendency towards quality over quantity. Documents and titles tend to be handled properly.
Fortune 福德宫An inner life that values balance, propriety and being held in reasonable regard. Contentment is reachable and mildly dependent on others' opinion of you.
Parents 父母宫A respectable family background with a strong emphasis on doing things properly. What you inherited is the standard, and the obligation to live up to it.

Brightness: Tian Xiang well placed and badly placed

Bright and well-placed, Tian Xiang is a very fortunate star: trusted, well-received, professionally successful. Dimmed, the classical texts emphasise the dependency — a capable person attached to the wrong structure or an unworthy principal, which is the specific failure mode of this star.

How Tian Xiang changes with company

With Zi Wei it is the government configuration — authority plus administration. With Wu Qu it softens and professionalises the treasurer, and is one of the better charts to be around. With Lian Zhen it produces public service; with Tian Liang it produces the trusted adviser who is also a protector.

A star is never read alone. In Zi Wei the palace and the surrounding stars decide the outcome, which is why two charts with Tian Xiang in the same palace can read completely differently.

Common questions

What does Tian Xiang in the Life palace mean?
A balanced, diplomatic, well-presented personality that is trusted by people on opposite sides of a disagreement. Tian Xiang in the Life palace is traditionally read as a favourable placement — reasonable, successful and well thought of.
Why is Tian Xiang called the Chancellor?
Because it is the star of service at the centre of power: proper, competent and subordinate by nature. The image is precise — a chancellor administers a kingdom he does not own, and that is both the strength and the limitation of the placement.
Is Tian Xiang a good star for marriage?
The classical reading is favourable: a harmonious and well-matched partnership. The specific hazard is politeness between two accommodating people, which can carry a relationship a long way without either party raising the thing that matters.
What does Tian Xiang need?
A structure worth serving. This star performs outstandingly inside an institution or with a principal, and poorly when asked to generate direction from nothing. Choosing the structure carefully is more consequential for this placement than for most.
