Jia is the first heavenly stem and the yang form of Wood — traditionally described as the standing tree.
Traditional descriptions use tree imagery consistently — trunk, upward growth, and the property of being hard to bend once grown. The five-element association is Wood, the direction east, the season spring.
What the Jia day master means
甲木 is Yang Wood: a tree, not a shrub. The image matters because it sets the whole behaviour of the stem. A tree has one direction — upward — and it does not negotiate that direction with the weather. It grows around obstacles when it must, but it never decides the obstacle was right.
As a day master, Jia means the self is organised around a principle. Not necessarily a moral one — some Jia people are organised around a project, an institution, a family, an idea of how things should be done. What matters is that the principle arrives early, feels self-evident from the inside, and is expensive to abandon.
This is why Jia people are trusted with beginnings. Someone has to say "this is the direction" before anyone knows whether it is a good direction, and Jia says it without needing the consensus first. The cost of that is equally structural: a tree that has committed to a line has a very hard time discovering, later, that the line was wrong.

If this is your day master, the thing you probably do not notice is how much of your decision-making is already finished before the meeting starts. You experience it as having thought things through. Everyone else experiences it as having made up your mind. When someone says you are stubborn, the objection does not land, because from inside it does not feel like stubbornness — it feels like nobody has given you a reason yet. The distinction is real to you and invisible to them, and it is the source of most of the friction in your working life.
Where Jia is strong
You can commit before the information is complete. Most people cannot, which is why beginnings tend to default to you whether or not you wanted them.
A clear line gives everyone else something to organise around. Teams with a Jia at the front tend to know what they are doing, even when they cannot explain why.
There are things you will not trade for a better outcome. In an era where everything is negotiable, that is a rarer asset than it sounds, and it is why people keep coming back to you.
Wood grows by adding a ring a year. Your progress does not look dramatic in any single month and is unmistakable over a decade — as long as you are still in the same soil.
Where it goes wrong
Wood that will not bend breaks. You usually do not flex until the situation has already cost you something, and by then the flexibility is being extracted rather than offered.
Being right about the direction does not mean being right about the timing, the person, or the cost. You are prone to winning the argument and losing the decade.
Starting is native; upkeep is not. Things you built get neglected once the interesting part is over, and you notice the neglect only when it becomes a crisis.
You extend the same standard you hold yourself to and are genuinely surprised when people fold under it. The surprise is sincere, which is exactly what makes it hard for them to say so.

Jia does well wherever someone has to be first. Founding, turning a department around, taking a category nobody is defending, being the person who decides the standard. What it does badly is maintenance — roles that are mostly preserving someone else's system will hollow you out within two years. The classic Jia mistake is staying in a job because it is going fine. Fine is not enough soil for this stem.
Money
Money is a resource to fund the direction, not a scoreboard. You will happily take a pay cut for a project you believe in and then be quietly resentful when it turns out to have been a bad project. Your earning usually comes in step changes rather than a smooth line, because it arrives with the beginnings you take on.
Relationships
You love without much ambiguity and are poor at the small theatre around it. Partners can rely on what you say and often miss what you feel — neither of these is an accident. The recurring difficulty is that you want to be met as an equal, and the people who are drawn to a very steady person are often looking for exactly the stability they complain about later.
Under pressure
Under pressure Jia hardens rather than adapts. You will keep pushing past the point where the plan stopped working, treating the resistance as a test of commitment rather than as information. Physical tension collects in the spine, neck and liver in the traditional mapping, and the behavioural version is that you keep standing when you should sit down.

What it needs
Geng and Xin Metal — a blade. Yang Wood without metal is a tree that grows in every direction and becomes a thicket: busy, unbounded, and impossible to live in. What the metal provides is not correction but shape — someone or something that trims the excess so the growth goes where you intended. In practice this is usually a demanding mentor, a hard feedback culture, or a standard you cannot argue with.
When it is excessive
Too much Wood in a chart and the principle becomes the personality. You start treating every disagreement as a question of integrity, and the people around you learn to stop bringing you information.
When it is weak
A weak Jia is a vine pretending to be a tree — the direction is still there but the trunk is not. It responds well to Water rather than more Wood: nourishment and space, not louder conviction.
By season and month
Wood born in spring is at full strength and benefits from metal to keep it usable. Wood born in autumn is structurally weak and needs Water and more Wood. The same stem can read as a natural leader in one chart and as a person who never gets going in another, and the month pillar is usually where the difference lives.

Your day master is the heavenly stem of the day you were born — the day pillar of your four pillars. It is not your zodiac animal: the animal comes from the year, and the two are independent. Because the day pillar runs on the sexagenary cycle rather than the solar calendar, you need the exact calendar date of birth, and a day is conventionally counted as starting at 23:00 the previous evening. Birth year alone is never enough to find a day master.
What does it mean to have Jia as a day master?
It means the organising principle of your chart is Yang Wood: the tree. Every other stem in your chart is read relative to it, which is why the same wealth star means something different in a Jia chart than in a Bing chart. A Jia born in spring with Water in the month is close to unstoppable; a Jia born in late autumn with Fire and Earth around it is structurally thin and needs help to get moving at all.
