The Ten Day Masters in BaZi

Your day master is the heavenly stem of your birth day — the character that represents you. It is the single most important piece of a BaZi chart, and the ten are ten genuinely different starting positions rather than ten labels.

What a day master is

A BaZi chart is eight characters: a stem and a branch for the year, the month, the day and the hour. The stem of the day is the day master. Practitioners read it first, because every other character in the chart is defined by its relationship to that one — supporting it, draining it, controlling it or competing with it.

The practical consequence is that the same character means different things in different charts. A wealth star in a Jia chart is not the wealth star in a Bing chart, because the thing being supported, expressed or constrained is a different self. This is the layer above the zodiac animal, and it explains most of why two people born in the same year live nothing alike.

Below are all ten, each with the full reading: what the stem is, how it feels from the inside, where it performs, where it goes wrong, and what balances it.

Common questions

What is a day master in BaZi?
The day master is the heavenly stem of your birth day — one of the ten stems, and the character that represents you in the chart. Every other stem and branch is read as a relationship to it, which is why practitioners identify the day master first and interpret everything else relative to it.
Is my day master the same as my zodiac animal?
No, and they are calculated from different pillars. Your animal comes from the birth year; your day master comes from the birth day. They are independent, so every animal year contains all ten day masters, and knowing your sign tells you nothing about which one you have.
How do I find my day master?
From your exact date of birth, using the day pillar of the four pillars. Because the day stem rotates on a ten-day cycle rather than following the calendar, there is no shortcut — and note that the Chinese day begins at 23:00, so a birth late in the evening belongs to the following day's stem.
