What it means to have Geng as your day master

庚金 is Yang Metal, and the images are the axe, the blade, and iron ore that still has to be smelted. Autumn is the season, and that is the right analogy: metal is what remains after the excess is removed. As a day master it produces a self that is direct, clean-edged and structurally allergic to ambiguity.

Geng people tend to be more comfortable with a hard truth than with a soft convenience, and this is not a position they arrived at — it is closer to a temperament. They also tend to be unusually good in crisis, because crisis removes precisely the ambiguity that normally costs them energy. When everything is on fire, the Geng is often the calmest and most useful person in the building.

The classical refinement is that raw metal is not yet a tool. Iron ore is heavy and useless until it is smelted and shaped, and the traditional reading is that Geng needs fire to become what it can be — refinement, pressure, and a standard imposed from outside. Geng that has never been through this tends to be blunt rather than decisive, and brutal where it meant to be honest.

From the inside

You know perfectly well that the way you said it caused half the reaction, and you are usually unwilling to spend the extra thirty seconds softening it, because softening feels like lying. What is harder to admit is that you do notice the cost. The decisions you make are remembered by the people on the other side of them, and you carry a reputation for hardness that is accurate about your methods and wrong about your motives. You are not indifferent to being liked; you simply refuse to buy it with accuracy.

Where this stem is strong

• Decisiveness. You can close a question. In any group, that is the rarest and most valuable function available, and it is native to you rather than a technique.
• Fair dealing. You apply the same standard to everyone, including yourself and including people you like. That is why Geng people end up trusted with disputes.
• Composure under fire. Pressure clarifies rather than disorganises you. You are at your best at exactly the moment when most people are at their worst.
• Cutting the excess. You can end a project, a partnership or a habit that everybody has known was dead for a year. Someone has to, and it is usually you.

Where it goes wrong

• Collateral damage. You deliver the judgement at the same weight whether or not the recipient can carry it. The information is right; the dosage is the problem.
• Principled inflexibility. You would rather lose than be inconsistent, which reads as integrity and functions, at times, as a refusal to take in new information.
• Discomfort with softness. Warmth that is not stated clearly can pass you by entirely. People often assume you do not want it, because you have never given them evidence otherwise.
• Not asking. You handle things yourself past the point where help would have been the better call. Asking reads to you as an admission, and it is not one.

At work

Geng suits roles with real consequences attached: law, audit, restructuring, surgery, enforcement, security, engineering under constraint, and any leadership position where somebody has to be the one who calls it. You will rise faster in organisations that value clarity and hit a ceiling in ones that run on consensus. Money

You are decisive with money and comfortable with risk that you understand, which makes for an uneven but generally rising line. Your weakness is generosity expressed as territory — you will pay to make a problem go away and never mention the cost. Keep the two impulses separate and the numbers improve noticeably.

In relationships

You are loyal, direct and unspectacularly reliable, and you say what you mean — which partners either find restful or find too plain, depending on what they grew up with. The recurring issue is that your affection is demonstrated through what you do rather than stated, and the person next to you may be waiting for the sentence rather than reading the record.

Under pressure Geng goes harder and narrower, and the body registers it in the lungs, the skin and the breath — the traditional metal organs. Tension shows as shallow breathing, jaw clenching, and a form of irritability that is really exhaustion with the standard held too long.

What balances a Geng day master

Ding Fire — the forge. Yang Metal without fire is cold iron: strong, unrefined, and useful only as weight. Ding Fire is what turns Geng into an instrument, which in a chart means refinement, an imposed standard, or pressure that forces the person to become more precise than they were naturally inclined to be. Ren Water is the second support: metal washes clean, and water gives Geng its voice and its writing.

When it is too much: Too much Metal and the directness becomes aggression. Every problem looks like something that needs cutting, including problems that simply needed time.

When it is too little: A weak Geng is soft metal — still principled, without the edge to act on it. It wants Earth (support) and Fire (refinement) rather than more Metal, which only adds hardness to something that cannot use it.

Across the seasons: Metal born in autumn is at full strength and needs Fire to be shaped and Water to be articulate. Metal born in spring is thin and is often overwhelmed by the Wood around it — these charts frequently read as people with strong views and little leverage, until support arrives.
