Bi Jian 比肩 — Parallel Self
Companion is your own element in your own polarity: the second of the ten gods and the simplest to state. It is you, reflected. Every peer, sibling, ally and competitor occupies this slot, and which of those they turn out to be is decided by the rest of the chart.
your own kind — allies, peers and competitors
At a glance
Bi Jian is the ten god representing the same element as the day master in the same polarity — the parallel self.
Traditional readings associate Bi Jian with equals and with sharing: resources divided rather than concentrated.
What Companion means
比肩 is the day master meeting itself. Same element, same polarity — for a Yang Wood day master, another Yang Wood. The classical readings follow the image exactly: Companions share your position, so they share your interests and they compete for the same things. Whether a given Companion behaves as a colleague or a rival is not determined by the god; it is determined by whether the chart needs the support.
This is the most relational of the ten gods. Where Wealth concerns resources and Officer concerns structure, Companion concerns the question of who else is in your position. Charts with strong Companion describe people for whom peers are a central fact of life: strong brotherhood and sibling dynamics, competitive peer groups, work that requires collaborators who are also equals.
The economic reading is the one that matters in practice. Companion and Rob Wealth both divide wealth — mathematically, generating the controlling element and earning are the same operation, and peers consume part of what you produce. This is why classical texts say a chart with strong Wealth needs its Companions under control: not because peers are bad, but because unchecked peers dilute the return on your own effort.
From the inside
From the inside, Companion feels like always having a yardstick. You know roughly where you stand relative to the people in your field, and the knowledge is not competitive in the hostile sense — it is more like a coordinate you cannot stop updating. You also have a specific and useful way of working: you would rather build alongside peers than above subordinates. What you often underestimate is how much of your best work has actually been done with other people, since from inside it feels like you did it alone.
Where Companion is strong
You build well with peers and poorly with subordinates, which makes you a strong co-founder and a weak manager of juniors.
You assume you will have to do it yourself and are rarely wrong about that.
You notice when an arrangement is uneven before anyone raises it, and you are usually the first to correct it.
Where you commit to a team, you commit to the other members rather than to the institution — often more durable.
Where it goes wrong
Peers and partners take a share of what you produce. Without a structure that recognises your contribution, you finance other people's progress.
The yardstick is always running. Measuring yourself against people who made different choices is a reliable source of unhappiness.
You would rather stay an equal than take authority, and growth often requires the latter.
When the chart is under pressure this god produces a stiff, self-protective streak that reads as coldness to people who were counting on you.
How it reads in each pillar
Siblings and early peers shape the childhood. Charts like this often describe a family with several children and an early sense of comparison.
The strongest position. Peers and partners are central to the career, and work is done in groups of equals rather than in hierarchies.
The spouse palace: traditionally read as a partner who is more like a peer than a complement, with the relationship organised around equality.
Later peers and collaborators; also read as children who grow into something closer to equals than dependants.

Common questions
What is Companion in BaZi?
Companion (比肩) is your day master's own element in the same polarity — for a Yang Wood day master, another Yang Wood. It represents peers, siblings, allies and competitors: everyone who occupies your position and competes for the same things.
What is the difference between Companion and Rob Wealth?
Both are the day master's own element. Companion is the same polarity and reads as a peer ally. Rob Wealth (劫财) is the opposite polarity and reads as rivalry — ambition that takes resources rather than sharing them.
Why do Companions dilute wealth in BaZi?
Wealth is the element the day master controls. Generating more of the day master's own element does not increase the revenue; it increases the number of claimants on the result. That is the mechanical basis for the classical caution about strong Companion charts.
Does Companion mean I will have siblings?
It is associated with siblings and early peer relationships, but not deterministically. In practice the god describes the structure of a person's relationships — how much of life happens alongside equals — rather than the size of their family of origin.
