Ladder

A ladder is read as provisional ascent — a climb that depends on something you placed yourself. Unlike stairs, a ladder is movable and temporary. Traditional reading treats it as effort rather than structure, and asks who is holding the base.

It points to a function rather than an event. A ladder is read as provisional ascent — a climb that depends on something you placed yourself. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A ladder that is too short for the height is one of the most reported variants, read as method adequate to the plan but not to the actual distance.

Sources distinguish the ladder from the staircase precisely on this point: the ladder's stability is somebody's responsibility, and dreams about it usually turn there. It is grouped under Wood (木) in the five-element system.
