Stairs

Stairs are read as graded progress — change that comes in steps rather than all at once. Stairs are Earth structures, built and counted. The traditional reading asks whether you were going up, down, or counting the steps.

It points to a function rather than an event. Stairs are read as graded progress — change that comes in steps rather than all at once. Traditional readings ask what the object is for and whether it is working, rather than treating it as a sign. A staircase that changes width as you climb is a recorded variant, read as a course whose room for manoeuvre is changing.

Descending is not read negatively in the sources — it is read as going toward something established rather than toward something not yet built. It is grouped under Earth (土) in the five-element system.
