Earth Colours

Earth's colour is 黃, yellow, and specifically the yellow of earth rather than of sunlight — ochre, clay, and the yellow of the loess plateau that the correspondence was formed on. It is the colour of the centre, and in the classical scheme it is the imperial colour for exactly that reason.

At a glance

Earth's colour is 黃 — ochre and clay rather than sunlight, the colour of the centre.

In the classical correspondence tables Earth governs late summer and the centre, the spleen and stomach, the mouth, and the sweet taste.

Why Earth is yellow

The range runs from a pale sand to a deep ochre, and the shade carries information the way it does for Wood. A chart that is short of Earth tends toward the pale end; a chart with excess Earth runs to the dark, heavy yellows and browns. Practitioners read the shade, not the category.

In application yellow is used for the centre of a space and for anything that needs to feel grounded — floors, tables, the objects a person touches daily. It is the least decorative of the five colours and the one most often used as a background, which fits the phase: Earth is what other things happen on.

Where it goes wrong is when yellow becomes the accent of a room that needs energy. An Earth-heavy chart in an ochre room is being told to settle when it has already settled, and the result is the domestic version of the excess picture: comfortable, immovable, and slightly stale.

How the colour is used

How the colour is used

As ground rather than as accent: floors, walls in the middle of a room, table linen, the surface a person works on. Earth colour is supporting, and it stops working when it becomes the subject.

Where it goes wrong

As an accent in a space that needs movement, or applied to a chart that is already heavy. Both add weight where the problem is too much weight.

How much weight this carries

Colour correspondences are the most usable part of the system and the least metaphysical: they are a convention, and conventions work by being shared. Wearing yellow does nothing on its own. It does something when the person wearing it is paying attention to what it is for.

Common questions

Why is yellow the imperial colour?

Because it is the colour of the centre, and the centre is the position of the ruler in the classical scheme. The political reading follows from the five-element one.

Is yellow good for a study?

For concentration, traditionally yes, because Earth is the phase of settling. For starting things it is the wrong signal.

What is the difference between 黃 and 土色?

黃 is the classical correspondence and covers the range from sand to ochre; 土色 is the ordinary description of earth-coloured things. Earth's colour is the first.
