Earth and Direction

Earth sits at the centre, and this is the correspondence that makes the whole system legible: four directions for four phases, and a fifth position that is not a direction at all but the point they are measured from.

The five relations of Earth: what feeds it, what it feeds, what restrains it and what it restrains.
Earth at the centre of its own relations — Direction. Correspondences follow the classical classification.

At a glance

Earth sits at the centre — not a direction but the point the other four are measured from.

In the classical correspondence tables Earth governs late summer and the centre, the spleen and stomach, the mouth, and the sweet taste.

Why Earth sits centre

In practice the centre is where a room's activity is anchored — the middle of the floor, the table everyone gathers at, the place from which the other positions are visible. The tradition's instruction is to keep it clear, level and uncluttered, which is a piece of practical advice disguised as cosmology.

The distinction that matters is between centre as emptiness and centre as accumulation. A clear centre lets the room work; a centre used for storage is the domestic version of excess Earth — the middle of the space becomes the place things are put down, and the whole room loses its circulation.

What not to do is treat the centre as a direction. Placing the Earth colour or the Earth object in a compass sector is a category error: the phase is not located anywhere, which is precisely its function. The classical correction is to look at the middle of the space rather than at the compass.

Placement, and what not to do

Placement

A clear, level centre; the table where people gather; the floor between the other positions rather than against a wall. Earth is where the room is measured from.

What not to do

Do not assign Earth to a compass sector, and do not use the centre for storage. Both turn the mediating position into one of the things it is supposed to mediate between.

How much weight this carries

Direction is the feng shui application of a five-element idea, and feng shui is where this system gets most speculative. The compass correspondence is traditional and consistent; the claim that moving a desk changes a life is neither. Use the first, be sceptical of the second.

Common questions

Which direction is the Earth element?

None, in the strict reading — it is the centre. Sources that assign it northeast or southwest are using a different mapping (the eight trigrams), not the five-element one.

What goes in the centre of a home?

Nothing much, traditionally: clear floor, level surfaces, and the thing everyone gathers around. The centre is circulation, not storage.

Is the centre of a house important in feng shui?

It is the position the other eight are read against, so yes — and the common correction is simply to clear it.
