Earth in Dreams
In the classical dream typology Earth appears as hills and mounds, walls and houses, and as dreams of singing and music. The pairing is unexpected until one notices that all of them are about structure holding something — ground, walls, and a sound that fills a room.

Earth in dream imagery
The Inner Canon's pattern holds: an abundant phase produces its emotion, a lodged pathogen produces its imagery. For Earth the imagery is mounds, hills, walls and buildings, and the emotion is 思 — thinking, brooding, the mind that will not stop turning something over. Dreams of singing are assigned here too, which the commentaries read as the voice filling a space the way Earth fills a chart.
The motifs that recur are enclosure, weight, and unfinished building. A house with rooms that do not connect, a wall that will not stop being built, a hill that has to be crossed, ground that gives way — the common structure is a container that is either too much or not enough for what it holds.
The reading question is whether the structure is holding or trapping. A house in a dream is shelter in one reading and confinement in another, and the classical manuals are more interested in which one the dreamer felt. That is a general principle in this material: the same image carries opposite readings depending on the affect attached.

Motifs that recur
Hills and mounds, walls, houses and rooms, building work, ground that moves, and the specific dream of being unable to leave a building.
How to read it
Ask whether the structure is shelter or confinement. Earth imagery is about what holds you, and the dream usually says which kind by how it feels to be inside.

Dream symbolism is the most personal layer and the least rule-bound. The same image means different things depending on what else is in the dream, and the classical dream manuals disagree with each other more than the chart manuals do. Use these as prompts, not definitions.

Common questions
What does it mean to dream of a house?
In this system, Earth — structure, the self as a container, and the state of what is being held. The rooms tend to map onto areas of life in the popular reading, which the classical texts do not support.
Why do I dream about building something?
Earth imagery includes construction, and the phase is associated with consolidation. Unfinished building dreams usually track something in waking life that will not complete.
Are dreams of walls about being trapped?
They can be. The same wall is protection in one dream and a prison in another, and the difference is the dreamer's response rather than the object.
