Earth in the Zodiac

Four animals carry Earth: the Dragon, the Dog, the Ox and the Goat. That is twice as many as any other phase, and the reason is the same one that gives Earth four branches — it is present at every seasonal handover.

At a glance

Four animals carry Earth — Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat — one for each seasonal handover.

In the classical correspondence tables Earth governs late summer and the centre, the spleen and stomach, the mouth, and the sweet taste.

The animals that carry Earth

The four are read differently despite sharing a phase. 辰 (Dragon) and 戌 (Dog) are the spring and autumn handovers and are considered the stronger pair; 丑 (Ox) and 未 (Goat) are the winter and summer handovers and are read as wetter and drier respectively. A Goat year and a Dog year are both Earth and are not the same year.

The stem layer adds the usual second dimension. 2024 was 甲辰, yang Wood on the Dragon — Wood controlling Earth, a year read as pressure on structure. 2027 will be 丁未, yin Fire on the Goat — Fire feeding Earth, the opposite relationship. The animal supplies the branch; the stem supplies what is happening to it.

The practical consequence is the same as everywhere else in this library: the year animal is the shallowest layer, and Earth is the clearest case of why. Four animals share the phase, so knowing that someone is a Dragon tells you less than knowing they were born in 辰 with a Wood stem on top.

Years, and the two-layer element

Years

Dragon: 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964. Dog: 2030, 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970. Ox: 2021, 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961. Goat: 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967.

The two-layer element

All four branches are Earth; the year's stem adds a second element. 甲辰 is Wood on Earth, 丁未 is Fire on Earth, and the two years read in opposite directions.

How much weight this carries

The zodiac year is the shallowest layer of the system, and it is the one most people arrive through. Twelve animals is a coarse filter: it groups roughly eight percent of the population together and then asks you to believe they share a temperament. The element layer underneath is what makes it specific.

Common questions

Which animals are Earth signs?

Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat — four, because Earth occupies the handover month at the end of every season.

Why is the Dragon considered special?

Culturally for reasons outside this system, and astrologically because 辰 is the spring handover and stores Water and Wood. The animal is not more 'powerful' than the others in the five-element reading.

Are Dragon and Dog compatible?

They are both Earth and they are directly opposite in the branch cycle — 辰 and 戌 are a clash pair. See the pair pages for how the tradition reads that.
