Balancing Water means giving it a bank and an outlet, in that order. Earth first to stop it spreading, then Wood to spend it, and a reduction in the Metal that keeps feeding it. What it does not mean is adding depth: Water is the phase most likely to be already deep and short of movement.

What balance means for Water

Earth is the bank: a boundary, a deadline, a decision that has to be made. This is the correction Water charts resist most, because it feels like being dammed. The classical position is the opposite — a river without a bank is a flood, not a river.

Wood is the outlet: a project, an output, a use for the depth. Water without Wood accumulates and stagnates, which is the domestic version of the excess picture — a person with a great deal of understanding and nothing to show for it.

Reducing Metal is the lever people skip. If the chart is constantly supplied with more material to think about and no requirement to act, no amount of banking will hold — the input has to be cut. The practical version is unglamorous: fewer inputs, one output, before the next thing is taken in.

Bank with Earth and spend with Wood: one commitment with a date, one thing produced. Then reduce Metal — fewer inputs, less to hold.

Too weak

Feed with Metal before adding Water: structure, rest, and a reliable routine. Then fewer obligations. Adding activity to a depleted chart is how the deficiency deepens.

Practical adjustments

In the chart: favour Metal and Water luck cycles, be careful in Earth-heavy years. In a life: one deadline, one output, and more sleep. The second list is the same instruction in a different vocabulary.

How much weight this carries

Balancing is the practical end of the system and the one most often sold as a product. The honest version is unglamorous: identify what is missing or overgrown, add or remove a small amount, then check the chart again. Anyone promising a permanent fix is selling something else.
