Wood and Metal

Metal controls Wood. Of the four relations this is the one people dislike most, because it is the one where the chart is on the receiving end of the cut — and the classical texts are considerably less alarmed about it than modern readers expect.

At a glance

Metal controls Wood: the axe shapes the beam, and the relation is uncomfortable by design.

Wood is controlled by Metal.

What Wood does to Metal

The image is an axe, and an axe is not an enemy. Uncut wood is a thicket; cut wood is a beam. The tradition's position is that a phase without restraint has no shape, and that being shaped is uncomfortable by definition rather than by malice. A Wood chart with healthy Metal in it tends to produce people who can take a rule, which is not a small advantage.

The problem is proportion. Metal heavier than the Wood can carry produces the deficient picture: hesitation, brittleness, a person who has been corrected so consistently that they no longer start anything. The distinction between pruning and clearing is entirely a matter of how much is being removed relative to what is there.

In a chart, and in a person

In a chart

Metal is useful when Wood is overgrown, and harmful when Wood is already weak. The same characters read in opposite directions depending on the season the Wood was born into.

In a person

You are the one being shaped. It works when the shaping is occasional and specific, and fails when it is continuous — which is the difference between a mentor and a critic.

How much weight this carries

Being controlled is the relation people dislike hearing about, and the classical texts are less alarmed than modern readers expect. Restraint is how a chart gets shape. The problem is only when the restraint is heavier than the thing being restrained.

Common questions

Is Metal bad for Wood?

Only in excess. Metal is what gives Wood shape; a chart with no Metal at all often reads as overgrown rather than free.

Why does being controlled feel personal?

Because in this relation the restraint lands on the self rather than on circumstances. The tradition's advice is the same either way: check the proportion, not the intention.
