Wood and Water

Water generates Wood. This is the most benign of the four relations and the one with the most invisible cost: a phase that is fed does not choose what it is fed on, and the supply is someone else's to withhold.

Water feeds Wood — one step of the generating cycle.

At a glance

Water generates Wood: the supply that makes growth possible, and the dependency that comes with it.

Wood is generated by Water.

What Wood does to Water

In a chart, Water behind Wood is what makes the phase strong rather than merely present. It is the difference between a stem with a root and a stem on paper, and practitioners look for it before they look at anything else about the Wood. A well-supplied Wood chart is the one that can act on its own intentions.

The cost is dependency, and the classical texts are clear-eyed about it. Being generated is comfortable, and comfortable phases stop developing the capacity to generate for themselves. The reading for someone in this position is not 'you are lucky' but 'check whether the support is still a choice' — a distinction that matters most at exactly the moment the support is withdrawn.

In a chart, and in a person

In a chart

The single most important support for Wood. Charts with strong Water and rooted Wood are the ones that read as capable; charts with Wood and no Water read as effort.

In a person

You are the one being supported, and the relationship works while the support is unconditional. The friction arrives when it stops being — usually without warning.

How much weight this carries

Being fed by another element sounds like an advantage and often is, but it has a failure mode: a chart can become dependent on a supply it does not control. The traditional warning is not about weakness but about the cost of the support.

Common questions

Is Water always good for Wood?

Almost always, and it is the one near-universal in the system. The exception is a chart so cold and wet that the Wood is waterlogged, which is rare and reads as stagnation rather than growth.

Why is Water the first thing to add to a weak Wood chart?

Because adding Wood to an unsupported chart produces more effort without more capacity. Support comes before the thing it supports.
