A BaZi month does not begin on the 1st. It begins at one of twelve 节, and the other twelve terms are not boundaries at all. Here is the sequence, and how to check a chart against it by hand.
Almost every explanation of the Chinese calendar starts with Chinese New Year, and almost all of them get the interesting part wrong. The year pillar is the easy case: it changes once a year, on a date everyone can look up. The month pillar is where the machinery actually shows, because the BaZi month has nothing to do with the calendar month.
There are twenty-four solar terms. BaZi uses twelve of them. Knowing which twelve, and why the other twelve are decorative, resolves most of the confusion about why a chart changes its month character in the middle of March.
The twenty-four terms divide the sun's path into twenty-four equal fifteenths. Read in order, they alternate between two kinds. The 节 (jié) open a month; the 气 (qì) sit at the midpoint of one and mark nothing structurally.
So the list is not twenty-four boundaries. It is twelve boundaries with twelve midpoints between them, and the names do not tell you which is which — 立春 is a 节, 雨水 is a 气, 惊蛰 is a 节, 春分 is a 气, and so on, alternating all the way round.
This is the reason two people born three weeks apart in March can have different month branches, and two people born a fortnight apart in the same month can have the same one.
Starting at 立春, which opens the Tiger month and is the beginning of the BaZi year: 立春 (寅), 惊蛰 (卯), 清明 (辰), 立夏 (巳), 芒种 (午), 小暑 (未), 立秋 (申), 白露 (酉), 寒露 (戌), 立冬 (亥), 大雪 (子), 小寒 (丑).
Read the dates rather than the names and the point becomes obvious. 立春 falls around 4 February. 惊蛰 falls around 6 March. The month branch changed on the sixth of March, not on the first of March, and not at the new moon either.
A worked example, checkable against any almanac: 19 September 2026 is the 丙午 year, 丁酉 month, 丙申 day. The 酉 month opened at 白露 on 8 September and closes at 寒露 on 8 October. Someone born on 5 September 2026 has a 申 month; someone born four days later has a 酉 month, and their charts are structurally different in the heaviest pillar.
Of the four pillars, the month gets the most attention in practice, and the reason is the season. The month branch is what tells you whether your day master is in its element or out of it — whether Wood is at full strength in spring or spent in autumn.
Everything downstream depends on that judgement. Strength decides which elements count as favourable, and favourable elements decide how every other character in the chart is read. So an error at the month boundary is not a local error. It flips the premise of the reading.
This is also why the 节 dates matter more than Chinese New Year for anyone working with BaZi. Chinese New Year tells you which year you are in. The 节 tell you what season you were born into, which is the more consequential fact.
The terms are defined by the sun's longitude, not by a calendar rule, so their civil dates drift by a day from year to year. 立春 is 4 February most years and 3 February in others. This is not sloppiness in the calendar; it is what happens when you anchor a date to an astronomical event rather than to a fixed position in a month.
That has a practical consequence. Any table of solar terms that gives a single date per term is giving you an approximation, and it is fine for most purposes — but if a birth falls within about a day of a 节, the approximation is not good enough and the exact term time has to be looked up.
This is the same boundary problem that shows up with birth hours. The system is defined on continuous astronomical quantities, and every conversion to a civil date or a two-hour block introduces a place where a borderline case can go either way.
Classical calendars used two ways of placing the terms. The equal-division method cuts the year into twenty-four intervals of the same length, which is simple and was standard for centuries. The true-solar-longitude method places each term where the sun actually reaches the next multiple of fifteen degrees, which is uneven because the Earth's orbit is elliptical.
The difference between the two reaches a couple of days at the extremes, and the true method has been the standard in China since the seventeenth century. Modern BaZi software uses it. But older printed tables sometimes carry the equal-division dates, and when they do, births near a boundary will disagree between the table and the calculator.
Neither method is a mistake. They are two stated conventions, and the only problem is a table that does not tell you which one it used.
Find the birth date. Walk through the twelve 节 dates until you pass the one immediately before it. That term gives you the month branch.
Then, if you want the month stem as well, apply the 五虎遁 rule: the Tiger month takes the stem that follows from the year stem. 甲 and 己 years start the Tiger month with 丙. 乙 and 庚 start with 戊. 丙 and 辛 start with 庚. 丁 and 壬 start with 壬. 戊 and 癸 start with 甲. From there the stems run in order through the branches.
That is the whole month pillar — one lookup and one rule. Doing it by hand once is worth more than reading about it, because it makes the boundary visible in a way a generated chart never does.
