Your birth certificate records clock time, not sun time. Here are the three corrections that convert one to the other — and the narrow cases where the difference actually changes your chart.
Almost every argument about 'accurate' BaZi software comes down to one question: which time are you using? A clock is a political instrument. It tells you what the government of the place you were born decided the time should be, and that decision has changed repeatedly over the last century. The sun does not consult anyone.
BaZi is a solar system. The hour pillar is meant to record where the sun actually stood, so a chart built from raw clock time can be wrong — usually harmlessly, occasionally by a whole pillar. This guide covers the three corrections in the order they are applied, and the cases where each one matters enough to change what you read.
Standard time is defined by a central meridian. A person born at the eastern edge of a time zone is well ahead of that meridian in solar terms; a person born at the western edge is well behind it.
The correction is four minutes per degree of longitude, but the number you multiply by is the difference between your birth longitude and the meridian the clock was using — not the difference from Greenwich. A birth in western China and a birth in eastern China can sit in the same nominal time zone and differ by over an hour and a half of real solar time. Getting the meridian wrong is the single most common source of a wrong hour pillar, and it is why 'my birth city' is not a decorative field on a calculator.
Many countries have shifted their clocks for summer time, and some have shifted them permanently for political reasons — a country can re-draw its time zone overnight and never change it back.
If you were born during a summer-time period and your clock time was recorded as-is, you may need to subtract the offset before doing anything else. This is the correction most likely to flip a birth hour from one branch to the previous one, because daylight saving offsets are usually an hour, and an hour is a full branch.
In practice this is the hardest part to get right, because reliable historical time-zone records for some regions are genuinely incomplete. A calculator that claims to handle it should be able to show you which offset it applied. If it cannot, treat its hour pillar as provisional.
The Earth's orbit is elliptical and its axis is tilted, so the sun is not a perfect clock. Solar noon drifts ahead of and behind mean noon through the year by up to about a quarter of an hour.
The effect is smooth and predictable: roughly minus fourteen minutes around mid-February and plus sixteen minutes around early November. It is small, but it is the difference that decides borderline cases — and in BaZi, borderline cases are exactly where people argue.
Here is the honest part. The hour pillar changes only when the true solar time lands on the other side of a two-hour boundary. If your clock time is comfortably in the middle of a branch — say 10:30, well inside the 09:00–11:00 window — no correction discussed here will move your chart, and a calculator that omits them is still giving you the right answer.
The corrections matter most for three groups: people born within about half an hour of a branch boundary, people born in a region with a large longitude offset from its time zone meridian, and people born during a daylight-saving period. If you are in one of those groups, your hour pillar is worth checking by hand rather than trusting.
The wider point is not that you need solar time to read a chart. It is that you should know which time your chart was built on, because a reading delivered with confidence from an hour pillar that was silently wrong is worse than no reading at all.
Solar time corrections do not settle the day boundary. Classical practice often starts the new day at the beginning of the Zi hour, which is 23:00, not midnight — so a birth at 23:30 can belong to the next day's pillar even though the calendar date has not changed.
That convention is layered on top of the corrections above: first you decide the true solar time, then you decide which day it falls in. Applying them in the other order produces charts that no school would recognise.
