Qi Sha (七杀) — The General

What Qi Sha is

七杀 is the General star, and it is the system's principal representative of force. Its classical associations are authority earned through struggle, decisiveness, risk and the pressure that either breaks a chart or produces an unusually strong person from it.

Charts with Qi Sha prominent are typically formed by difficulty rather than despite it. They handle pressure better than almost any other configuration, they are decisive when others hesitate, and they have an unusually high tolerance for conflict when conflict is the correct tool. In crisis professions, in competitive business and in any role where somebody has to walk into a hostile situation, this is the configuration that performs.

The classical difficulty is depletion and isolation. A general is not much loved by the troops and lives in a state of continuous readiness; charts with Qi Sha strong are prone to spending themselves, to treating ordinary situations as contests, and to accumulating the kind of damage that high-pressure lives produce. The traditional remedy is structure and companionship — a channel for the force, and someone who is not an opponent.

From the inside

You are aware that you are unusually hard to move and less aware of how much of your life has been organised as a response to pressure. The specific test worth applying: how many of your current commitments are things you chose, and how many are fights you took because the alternative was losing them. Also worth knowing — you recover from conflict much faster than the people around you, and you can be surprised by the damage a disagreement did to a relationship you assumed was fine.

Where it works

• Performance under pressure. You are better, not worse, when the stakes are real. There is no substitute for this quality and it is impossible to teach.
• Decisiveness. You act when others are still deliberating. In any field with real consequences, that is the difference between a plan and an outcome.
• Endurance. You can hold an uncomfortable position for a long time. Most people can hold one for a week.
• Independence. You do not need approval to proceed, which frees you from the constraint that limits most capable people.

Where it costs you

• Fighting when there is no fight. You can convert an ordinary difference of view into a contest, and win it at a cost that was not necessary.
• Depletion. You spend physical and emotional reserves at a rate that no recovery period makes up. The bill arrives later and is not negotiable.
• Isolation. Intensity keeps people at a distance, so the charts with this star are often strong and alone — respected and not much included.
• Damage tolerance. You absorb hits without registering them, which means both your relationships and your health get less maintenance than they need.

Brightness: Qi Sha well placed and badly placed

Bright and supported, Qi Sha is the general who wins: authority, achievement, real standing. Unsupported or badly placed, the classical reading is force without a channel — effort, conflict and attrition without the position or the resources to convert them.

How Qi Sha changes with company

With Zi Wei it becomes command with legitimacy. With Wu Qu it is the classic self-made fighting configuration. With Tian Liang the force acquires a protective direction. With Zi Wei or Tian Xiang as the reported pairing, the star converts from soldier into officer — markedly better in every respect.
