Fire and Direction
Fire sits south, the direction of the noon sun. The correspondence is the mirror of Wood's: where east is where light begins, south is where it is at its height, and the phase that governs visibility is placed at the point of maximum light.
火 Huǒ · summer · south
At a glance
Fire sits south — the noon direction, where light is at its height and things are meant to be seen.
In the classical correspondence tables Fire governs summer and the south, the heart and small intestine, the tongue, and the bitter taste.
Why Fire sits south
In a room the traditional placement puts Fire on the south side and, more usefully, puts the things that need to be seen there — the gathering place, the display, the hearth in the older sense. The reasoning is partly practical: in the northern hemisphere the south side gets the most sustained light, and the correspondence is a memory aid for that fact.
The distinction that matters is between light and heat. Fire in feng shui is often reduced to 'add red and a lamp', but the classical reading separates the two: light is what makes things visible, heat is what changes them. A south-facing room with good light is Fire doing its proper work; a south-facing room with a heater and a red wall is Fire overdone.
What not to do is place Fire where the chart needs rest. The bedroom is the standard example and the tradition is consistent about it: the south side of a sleeping room should not be the busiest, brightest, or most decorated part of it.
Placement, and what not to do
Placement
Gathering and display on the south side; the brightest light where people come together; a single strong accent rather than a scheme. The test is whether the corner makes you want to stay and talk.
What not to do
Fire colours and bright light in a bedroom, and heat sources treated as the element. Warmth is not the same as visibility, and the tradition distinguishes them.

How much weight this carries
Direction is the feng shui application of a five-element idea, and feng shui is where this system gets most speculative. The compass correspondence is traditional and consistent; the claim that moving a desk changes a life is neither. Use the first, be sceptical of the second.

Common questions
Should a desk face south?
South is the direction of visibility, so it suits work that is presented rather than work that is concentrated. East remains the usual recommendation for starting things.
Is a south-facing house better?
In the northern hemisphere it gets more light, which the tradition reads as favourable. The five-element reading and the practical one agree here, which is not always the case.
Can I have too much south in a home?
Yes — an over-lit, over-warm south side is the domestic version of excess Fire. The correction is shade and quiet, not more red.
