Fire governs summer, the phase where the year is at its fullest and has not yet begun to turn. In the twenty-four solar terms the Fire block runs from 立夏 in early May to 立秋 in early August, and the three months are 巳, 午 and 未.

Fire and summer

Summer's instruction in this system is the opposite of spring's: spring starts things, summer brings them out. The classical advice is to be expansive, to be visible, to let what was built in spring be seen — and the failure mode of the season is holding back, which the tradition reads as a kind of stagnation rather than as modesty.

The months matter as much as the season. 巳 is the first summer month and carries strong Fire with hidden Metal inside it; 午 is the peak, pure Fire and the most extreme point of the year; 未 is the transition month, technically Earth, where the season starts handing over. A chart born in 午 reads hotter than one born three weeks later.

For a person, the correspondence is about the peak of a cycle rather than the start of one. Fire-heavy charts tend to be most themselves when something is fully underway and most uncomfortable in the ramp-up and the wind-down — which is why the same person can be excellent at delivery and restless in planning.

What the season asks of you

To be seen, and to spend what was accumulated. The tradition treats summer as the season for output, and treats an output that never happens as a failure of the season rather than a personal one.

The seasons are the original evidence for the whole scheme — the cycle was read off the year before it was ever applied to a person. That is also its limit: a season is a phase everyone passes through, while a chart is a particular arrangement of phases.

Because the last month of each season is the handover, and Earth is the phase that mediates between the others. It is the same pattern in all four seasons.

What does the tradition say to do in summer?

Be active, be visible, and do not suppress the outward movement. The classical text is explicit that summer is for giving out, not for storing.
