The Snake and the Horse carry Fire. That is the fixed element of the branch — 巳 for the Snake, 午 for the Horse — and the two are read very differently despite sharing a phase, because 午 is the peak and 巳 is not.

The animals that carry Fire

The layer that makes the year specific is the stem on top. 2025 was 乙巳, yin Wood on the Snake: Wood feeding Fire, so the year reads as supplied rather than simply hot. 2026 is 丙午, yang Fire on the Horse — Fire on Fire, the strongest Fire year in the sixty-year cycle, and the year this page was written in.

That distinction is the whole argument against reading the animal alone. A Horse year is always Fire, but a 丙午 year and a 甲午 year are different years: one is Fire doubled, the other is Wood feeding it. The animal gives you the branch; the stem gives you what is happening to it.

The practical consequence for reading is the same as with Wood: the year animal is the shallowest available layer, twelve categories for the whole population, and it is useful mainly as an entry point to the element layer underneath. Two Horses born sixty years apart share a branch and very little else.

巳 and 午 are both Fire branches. The year's stem adds a second element — 乙巳 is Wood on Fire, 丙午 is Fire on Fire — and the two years read differently in a way the animal alone cannot show.

How much weight this carries

The zodiac year is the shallowest layer of the system, and it is the one most people arrive through. Twelve animals is a coarse filter: it groups roughly eight percent of the population together and then asks you to believe they share a temperament. The element layer underneath is what makes it specific.
