Water Colours
Water's colour is 黑, black, and the assignment surprises people who expect blue. The classical reasoning is about depth rather than about the colour of water in a glass: 黑 is the colour things become when you look into them far enough.
水 Shuǐ · winter · north
At a glance
Water's colour is 黑 — ink and lacquer rather than blue, the colour things become when you look far enough into them.
In the classical correspondence tables Water governs winter and the north, the kidney and bladder, the ears, and the salty taste.
Why Water is black
The range runs from a true black through the near-blacks of ink, lacquer and deep indigo. Ink is the clearest case — 墨 is black and is read as Water, which is why calligraphy and ink painting sit inside this correspondence rather than inside any other.
In application 黑 is used where a thing needs weight and quiet: the floor, a single wall, the object that anchors a room. It is the most demanding of the five colours in interior terms, because it absorbs light and makes a space smaller — which is exactly the effect the phase is supposed to have.
Where it goes wrong is in a space that needs expansion, and in a chart that is already deep. A Water-heavy person in a black room is being told to go further in when the problem is that they never come out. The correction is Wood — height, green, something growing — rather than more of the same.
How the colour is used
How the colour is used
As anchor and quiet: a dark floor, one deep wall, an object that holds a room down. Water colour works by absorption, and it stops working when it fills the space.
Where it goes wrong
In rooms that need light or expansion, and applied to a chart that is already withdrawn. Both add depth where the problem is too much of it.

How much weight this carries
Colour correspondences are the most usable part of the system and the least metaphysical: they are a convention, and conventions work by being shared. Wearing black does nothing on its own. It does something when the person wearing it is paying attention to what it is for.

Common questions
Why is black the Water colour and not blue?
Because the correspondence is to depth rather than to the appearance of water. 黑 is what you see when you look into water far enough, and 玄 — the dark, unfathomable — is the classical term.
Is black unlucky?
In this system nothing is lucky in itself. 黑 is the Water correspondence, appropriate where depth is needed and heavy where it is not.
Is blue also Water?
In the modern popular mapping yes, and in the classical one only partly — 青 covers the blue-greens and belongs to Wood. Water's colour is the dark end.
