Water and Direction

Water sits north, the direction of the sun's absence. The correspondence completes the compass: east for beginning, south for the peak, west for the end, and north for the dark interval in which the next cycle is stored.

水 Shuǐ · winter · north

The five relations of Water: what feeds it, what it feeds, what restrains it and what it restrains.
Water at the centre of its own relations — Direction. Correspondences follow the classical classification.

At a glance

Water sits north — the dark interval where the next cycle is stored rather than the place where things happen.

In the classical correspondence tables Water governs winter and the north, the kidney and bladder, the ears, and the salty taste.

Why Water sits north

In a room the traditional placement puts Water on the north side and, more usefully, puts the things that need quiet there — the place where sleep or study happens, the corner that is not asked to perform. The reasoning is partly practical: the north side of a building gets the least light, and the correspondence is a memory aid for that fact.

The distinction that matters is between water as element and Water as phase. A fountain is water; a still, dark, quiet corner is the phase. The tradition's Water corrections are about stillness rather than about moving water, which is the opposite of what most commercial feng shui recommends.

What not to do is place Water where the chart needs to be active. The north side of a workspace should not be the place where decisions are made — the phase's function is storage, and a room used for action is not being stored.

Placement, and what not to do

Placement

The north side for rest, study, and storage; the quietest corner of a room; dark and still rather than moving and lit. Water belongs where nothing needs to happen.

What not to do

Moving water in a bedroom (the classical caution), and Water features in the part of a room used for decisions. The phase is for storage, not for circulation.

How much weight this carries

Direction is the feng shui application of a five-element idea, and feng shui is where this system gets most speculative. The compass correspondence is traditional and consistent; the claim that moving a desk changes a life is neither. Use the first, be sceptical of the second.

Common questions

Should I put a fountain in the north?

The classical texts are more cautious about indoor moving water than popular practice is. Stillness is the phase's own quality, and a fountain is the opposite of it.

Is north good for a bedroom?

For rest, traditionally yes, because Water governs storage and quiet. It is the one direction where the five-element reading and the practical one about light agree.

What about the colour black in the north?

That doubles the dose. The north is already the Water direction, so adding the Water colour there is appropriate only for a chart that is short of the phase.
