Water attaches slowly and deeply. The phase does not do the opening stages — it watches, it remembers, and it does not declare — but the attachment that eventually forms is the most durable of the five, and the hardest to end.

How Water attaches to people

The cost is that the other person spends a long time unsure where they stand. Water experiences its own reserve as obvious — the feeling is clearly there — and does not register that nothing has been said. This is the most common complaint about the phase, and it is not solved by feeling more; it is solved by saying something.

Conflict is receding. Water does not raise its voice, does not escalate, and does not leave — it becomes unavailable while remaining present, which is a harder thing to argue with than anger. The phase experiences this as protecting the relationship from something worse; the partner experiences it as being shut out.

What Water needs is a partner who can tolerate not knowing for a while and who does not mistake reserve for absence. What it has to learn is that the depth it values is invisible from outside, and that saying the thing does not make it shallow.

Patience and consistency, and a partner who says what they want plainly. Water reads subtext well and still needs the text.

Where it rubs

Being pressed for an answer, and the accusation of coldness. Both cause the phase to recede further, which confirms the accusation.

How Water meets the other four

Wood

Water generates Wood — Water is the supply Wood grows on — support given before it is asked for.

Fire

Water controls Fire — Water ends Fire — the relation that stops things, and the reason a flame needs an edge.

Earth

Water is controlled by Earth — Earth is the bank: restraint that makes depth usable, and a wall when it is too much.

Metal

Water is generated by Metal — Metal is the surface Water condenses on — a source that does not announce itself.

How much weight this carries

Element compatibility is a description of friction, not a verdict on a relationship. Two people with difficult elements marry and do fine; two with easy ones separate. What the system predicts reliably is the shape of the argument they will have, not whether they will have it.
