The Si Branch (巳) in BaZi — Snake

What the 巳 branch is

巳 hides 丙、戊、庚: Yang fire as the main qi, Yang earth, and Yang metal. That metal matters enormously. Fire is the element that controls metal, so metal inside a fire branch is metal at its most vulnerable and metal at its most tempered — it is either being destroyed or being forged, depending on the rest of the chart. Si charts therefore tend to describe people who are either unusually resilient or unusually self-critical, and rarely in between.

The branch governs the first month of summer, when heat arrives but has not yet peaked. Si is therefore about emerging warmth rather than full sun: the point at which things become visible. Charts with Si in a prominent position often describe people who become known for something gradually, through a body of work, rather than through a single break.

The Snake association fits the mechanics. In Chinese imagery the snake is the animal that moves without legs — power that does not require visible machinery. Si is fire that arrives before you have noticed the sun is out.

From the inside

From the inside, Si feels like being several degrees warmer than the room and choosing not to mention it. There is a steady internal pressure toward doing something with what you know, and it is constantly tested by how little of it you say out loud. You also carry a private standard that is much stricter than any standard anyone applies to you — the metal inside the fire. When you dismiss your own work, it is not modesty. It is that you can see the difference between what you intended and what you produced, and nobody else can.

Hidden stems in Si

巳藏丙、戊、庚. Bing is the main qi — Yang fire, the sun. Wu earth is the middle qi, what the fire has produced. Geng metal is the leftover qi and the most consequential: it means Si can supply metal to a chart while also being the element that melts metal. Classical texts treat this as the branch's central tension.

How Si relates to the other branches

Where Si is strong

• Quiet intensity. You do not need volume to change a room. Your influence is concentrated rather than broadcast, and it lasts longer.
• Strategic patience. Snake imagery is about movement without visible effort. You are good at advancing a position while appearing to do nothing.
• Turning criticism into work. The metal inside Si gets forged rather than destroyed in most charts. You metabolise hard feedback into improvements faster than most people can absorb it.
• Selective visibility. You show the part that needs to be shown and keep the rest. In a career this translates into being consistently underestimated, which is an advantage in anything competitive.

Where it goes wrong

• Silent standards nobody can meet. Your internal bar is high and unstated. People working with you get judged against a criterion they have never been shown.
• Holding heat. Yin fire smoulders. Frustrations you do not express do not dissipate; they accumulate and then arrive suddenly.
• Self-criticism in place of rest. You can spend a recovery period auditing your own performance, which is not recovery.
• Advancing without signalling. Moving quietly is a gift until it looks like secrecy to the people who were supposed to be on your side.

The 09:00–11:00 birth hour

The Si hour (09:00–11:00) is mid-morning — the point at which the day's real work starts. Hour-pillar Si charts describe people who are functional earlier than everyone around them but who need a long runway before they are at their best.

In traditional medicine the branch is also assigned to heart, small intestine and the throat, which is why classical texts read chronic conditions through the branch that governs the season they began in.
