The Yin Branch (寅) in BaZi — Tiger

What the 寅 branch is

寅 holds the qi of 立春, the start of spring, which is also the start of the Chinese year in the solar calendar. Everything about the branch carries that opening energy: it is the calendar's first push, the point at which a closed system becomes an open one. Charts with Yin in a prominent position usually describe lives with more than one genuine restart in them.

It is also the branch of first attempts. A shoot that comes up early is exposed to every late frost, and Yin charts share that exposure: you commit to things before the conditions are safe, and you often carry the cost of having gone first.

寅 hides 甲、丙、戊 — Yang wood, Yang fire and Yang earth. That is the entire generating chain sitting in one branch: wood feeds fire, fire makes earth. So Yin is not just a beginning, it is a beginning that already contains its own next two stages. This is the technical reason 寅 is treated as a powerful branch in classical texts rather than merely a promising one.

From the inside

From the inside, Yin does not feel like confidence. It feels like impatience with a specific texture: the sense that the discussion has been had, that the remaining objections are administrative, and that continuing to talk is itself the risk. You are usually the first person in the room to move, and you are frequently the only one. What others call boldness you experience as ordinary boredom with delay — which is why you are sometimes surprised by how much resistance your decisions generate.

Hidden stems in Yin

寅藏甲、丙、戊. Jia is the main qi — the tree itself. Bing (Yang Fire) is the middle qi and explains why charts needing fire can be fed from a wood branch. Wu (Yang Earth) is the leftover qi, the ground the tree stands in. Reading order matters: Jia first, then Bing as capability, then Wu as the base.

How Yin relates to the other branches

Where Yin is strong

• Starting from nothing. You are unusually good at the first 10 percent — the part where there is no evidence yet and most people need permission.
• Momentum. Early movement attracts other movement. Things you start tend to gather people faster than things other people start.
• Bias to action under pressure. In a crisis you become clearer rather than more confused. Your worst decisions happen in calm periods, not in emergencies.
• Recovering from failure. Yin is spring; spring does not remember winter. You are able to begin again without spending much time on the post-mortem.

Where it goes wrong

• Frost damage. Going first means absorbing the cost of being early. Your setbacks are usually timing problems, not ability problems.
• Impatience read as arrogance. You move before consensus, and consensus reads that as a verdict on its own usefulness.
• Abandoning the second half. The beginning is where your energy peaks. Maintenance and consolidation feel like a demotion, so they get delegated or dropped.
• Burning the stored fuel. Bing inside Yin means the branch can burn what it is carrying. You can spend your own reserves faster than you notice.

The 03:00–05:00 birth hour

The Yin hour (03:00–05:00) is the hour before dawn — the coldest point of the day in practical terms, and the one at which the first birds start. Charts with Yin as the hour branch describe people who are most themselves before anyone else is awake.

In traditional medicine the branch is also assigned to liver, gallbladder and the limbs, which is why classical texts read chronic conditions through the branch that governs the season they began in.
