Metal (金) in Chinese Astrology
Metal is the element of reduction — the force that makes things precise by taking parts away. It is the only element defined by subtraction, which is why charts strong in Metal tend to describe people with unusually clear standards and an unusual willingness to cut.
What Metal does
金 is what remains after the excess is removed. In the generating cycle, Earth produces Metal — the ground yields ore — and Metal produces Water, which is the classical image of condensation: the cold surface that makes something visible that was diffuse. That chain explains Metal's role: it turns material into definition and definition into clarity.
Autumn is the season of Metal, and the correspondence is exact. Metal is the contraction that follows the year's growth: leaves removed, structure exposed, everything that was never load-bearing stripped away. Charts with strong Metal are read as people who are good at the last stage of things — assessment, refinement, closing — and often poor at the stage before it.
Metal controls Wood, and this is the relationship that produces the element's hardest readings. Metal cutting Wood is discipline, correction and pruning; it is also suppression. A chart with strong Metal and weak Wood describes a person whose standards are more developed than their capacity to begin, and who can spend years perfecting an approach to something they have not started.

From the inside, Metal feels like an involuntary audit of quality. Where Metal is an asset

- Willingness to cut. You remove what is not working while other people are still defending it. This saves years.
- Precision under pressure. When the situation tightens, you become more exact rather than less.
Where it becomes a liability
- Perfectionism as delay. The refining stage can extend indefinitely, and late delivery is still bad delivery.
- Cutting what needed growing. Not everything underperforming should be removed. Some of it is early.
- Criticism without cushion. Your assessment is accurate and its delivery costs you allies who would have accepted the same content framed differently.
- Standards that isolate. People stop showing you unfinished work, which removes you from the stage where you are most useful.
