What this decade shares

Geng-Xu opens this decade. Xu is one of the four earth storage branches — the metal vault, holding Xin metal and a trace of Ding fire — and the decade closes on Ji-Wei, the fire vault. Both ends of the 1970s are storehouse branches, which is unusual and worth a note: a span framed by two vaults is read in classical terms as a period organised around keeping and releasing what has been accumulated.

The animal span is Dog, Pig, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat. The decade omits the Monkey and the Rooster — the two metal branches. That is a genuinely distinctive feature: this is the only 1970s-style span in the cycle where both metal animals are absent, and it recurs in the 2030s.

The omission matters for anyone doing a compatibility calculation. If you were born in the 1970s, there is no one born in the same decade as you whose birth branch is Shen or You — so a Shen or You partner is always from a different decade, which changes how the age gap reads against the chart.
