What this decade shares

This decade repeats the 1970s exactly: Dog through Goat, with the Monkey and the Rooster missing. It is the second occurrence in the 1950–2043 window of a span that contains neither metal branch, and the gap will not appear again until the 2090s.

The opening pair, Geng-Xu, is metal on the metal vault — a stem sitting on the branch that stores its own element. That is a different structure from a stem that controls its branch or is controlled by it: Xu holds Xin metal as its middle qi, so a Geng-Xu year has metal in the stem and metal in the storehouse.

The closing pair is Ji-Wei, Yin earth on the fire vault. Wei stores Ding fire and Yi wood, so a decade that opens on stored metal closes on stored fire — one of the clearer internal temperature shifts available in a ten-year span.

For planning purposes, the 2030s are now within the range of forward annual content, and the year pillars are fixed by arithmetic rather than by prediction. That is the one genuinely reliable thing about any future year in Chinese astrology: the stem and branch are calculable exactly, while everything said about what they mean is interpretation.

The same ten-year sequence occurs sixty years earlier as 1970–1979 — identical stems, identical branches, identical elements.
