What Companion means

比肩 is the day master meeting itself. Same element, same polarity — for a Yang Wood day master, another Yang Wood. The classical readings follow the image exactly: Companions share your position, so they share your interests and they compete for the same things. Whether a given Companion behaves as a colleague or a rival is not determined by the god; it is determined by whether the chart needs the support.

This is the most relational of the ten gods. Where Wealth concerns resources and Officer concerns structure, Companion concerns the question of who else is in your position. Charts with strong Companion describe people for whom peers are a central fact of life: strong brotherhood and sibling dynamics, competitive peer groups, work that requires collaborators who are also equals.

The economic reading is the one that matters in practice. Companion and Rob Wealth both divide wealth — mathematically, generating the controlling element and earning are the same operation, and peers consume part of what you produce. This is why classical texts say a chart with strong Wealth needs its Companions under control: not because peers are bad, but because unchecked peers dilute the return on your own effort.

From the inside, Companion feels like always having a yardstick. You know roughly where you stand relative to the people in your field, and the knowledge is not competitive in the hostile sense — it is more like a coordinate you cannot stop updating. You also have a specific and useful way of working: you would rather build alongside peers than above subordinates. What you often underestimate is how much of your best work has actually been done with other people, since from inside it feels like you did it alone.

• Working as an equal. You build well with peers and poorly with subordinates, which makes you a strong co-founder and a weak manager of juniors.
• Self-reliance. You assume you will have to do it yourself and are rarely wrong about that.
• Fairness as instinct. You notice when an arrangement is uneven before anyone raises it, and you are usually the first to correct it.
• Loyalty in groups. Where you commit to a team, you commit to the other members rather than to the institution — often more durable.

Where it costs you

• Diluted effort. Peers and partners take a share of what you produce. Without a structure that recognises your contribution, you finance other people's progress.
• Comparison as a habit. The yardstick is always running. Measuring yourself against people who made different choices is a reliable source of unhappiness.
• Reluctance to lead. You would rather stay an equal than take authority, and growth often requires the latter.
• Guarding territory. When the chart is under pressure this god produces a stiff, self-protective streak that reads as coldness to people who were counting on you.
