Direct Seal (正印) — zheng yin
Direct Seal is the element that generates your day master, in the opposite polarity. It is the god of being looked after: parents, mentors, education, credentials and protection — support that arrives as a given rather than as a reward.
What Direct Seal means
正印 is the resource line of the chart. Water generates Wood, so a Wood day master has Water as its Seal. The relationship is exactly the one between a parent and a child in classical terms: the Seal gives, the day master receives, and the giving does not require the child to have earned it first.
This makes Direct Seal the god of learning in the broadest sense — not just formal education but the whole category of things you absorb from people who came before you. Charts with strong Direct Seal tend to describe people who read, who collect expertise, and who are unusually good at receiving instruction. The associated strength is depth: they know a subject properly rather than at the level required to talk about it.
The classical caution attached to the god is about passivity. Support that always arrives can produce a chart that consumes resources rather than generating them — credentials accumulated without application, a well-supported life that somehow never commits to anything. In traditional terms this is why Direct Seal needs either Wealth (to give it a purpose) or Output (to convert knowledge into work).
From the inside
From the inside, Direct Seal feels like a permanent, mild awareness that there is more to learn before you are ready. You are rarely satisfied that your knowledge of a subject is complete, and the feeling does not respond to accumulating more of it. There is also a specific comfort in being taught — you absorb well from people you respect, and a good teacher can change your direction in an afternoon. The cost is that the same receptivity makes it harder to commit to a decision before you feel informed, and some decisions never become fully informed.

Where Direct Seal works for you
- Depth of knowledge. You learn subjects properly rather than to the level required for the conversation, which makes your judgement unusually durable.
- Ability to be taught. You can take instruction without your ego intervening. This is rarer among able people than it should be.
- Support that finds you. Mentors, institutions and goodwill tend to appear. Part of this is luck; part is that you are genuinely easy to help.
- Patience with complexity. You will read the second and third source. In fields where depth matters, that is the whole difference.
Where it costs you
- Learning as avoidance. Research can become a way of postponing the decision it was meant to inform.
- Under-claiming. You know more than you say and can be outperformed in a room by someone who knows less and states it more confidently.
- Dependence on structure. Support that always arrives can leave the muscle of self-direction undertrained.
- Difficulty with the crude part. Not everything rewards depth. Selling, shipping and negotiating in bad faith all resist study.
