Direct Officer (正官) — zheng guan

Direct Officer is the element that controls your day master, in the opposite polarity — which makes it authority at its most legitimate. It is the god of rules you agree with: the role, the title, the standard you hold yourself to when nobody is checking.

What Direct Officer means

正官 is constraint that has been accepted. The distinction matters enormously in reading a chart. Any chart contains pressure; the question is whether the person experiences it as a structure they chose or as something imposed. Direct Officer charts overwhelmingly describe the first: people who function well inside institutions, take commitments literally, and care — sometimes more than they would like — about being considered respectable.

Classical texts treat Direct Officer as the god of reputation, and the association is mechanical rather than moral. If your behaviour is reliably governed by an external standard, other people can predict you, and predictability is the raw material of reputation. This is why the god shows up strongly in charts of people who rise inside organisations: not necessarily the most talented, but the most legible.

The common failure mode is equally predictable. Direct Officer charts can become over-attached to the framework itself — staying in a role that no longer fits, deferring to a hierarchy that has stopped deserving it, or confusing compliance with integrity. The god rewards structure; it does not ask whether the structure deserves the loyalty.

From the inside

From the inside, Direct Officer feels like an audience you cannot quite see. You hold yourself to a standard that exists in advance of any situation, and you are aware when you have not met it in a way that other people simply are not. That awareness is the engine of your reliability and the source of your worst stress, because the standard does not adjust for how tired you are or how unreasonable the week has been. When someone suggests you are too concerned with appearances, the criticism misses: it is not appearance you care about, it is the internal agreement you made and would rather not break.

Direct Officer in each pillar

PositionHow it reads
Year pillarA family expectation of respectability, sometimes a parental profession that set the template. Charts like this often include an early sense of duty.
Month pillarThe strongest position. Career, title and standing are central themes, and advancement inside a structure is usually the main axis of the life.
Day pillarTraditionally associated with a responsible, well-regarded partner and with someone who defines themselves through their role in the household.
Hour pillarLate recognition: honours, seniority, or a public role arriving after the main working years rather than during them.
Position changes the reading more than the god does. The month pillar is the strongest position in the chart; the day branch is the spouse palace; the hour pillar covers later life.

Questions about Direct Officer

What is Direct Officer in BaZi?
Direct Officer (正官) is the element that controls your day master, in the opposite polarity. For a Wood day master it is Metal. It represents accepted authority, structure, reputation and the rules a person genuinely agrees to live by.
What is the difference between Direct Officer and Seven Killings?
Both are the controlling element. Direct Officer is the opposite polarity — orderly, legitimate, self-imposed authority. Seven Killings (七杀) is the same polarity as the day master — raw pressure, competition and risk, which the chart must either discipline or be driven by.
Does Direct Officer mean a government job?
Not specifically. It is often associated with institutions, formal roles and status-based careers, but the underlying meaning is any structure the person accepts. Management, regulated professions and large organisations all express it.
What if Direct Officer is weak in my chart?
A weak or pressured Direct Officer usually describes someone who does not derive authority from external structure — they may be indifferent to titles, or find formal hierarchy unworkable — and whose sense of right conduct comes from somewhere else in the chart.
